Here are Some Important Facts about Herculaneum and Pompeii:

  • Herculaneum was buried after the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. In 1709 the digging of a deep well by a farmer revealed some exceptional statues at the lowest levels which was later found to be the site of the Roman theatre.
  • In 1927, open air excavations were carried out by archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri and most of the Roman city that can be visited today was uncovered in that period. The artifacts were particularly influential because they revealed much about domestic furnishings and the lives of ordinary Romans.
  • The ancient city of Pompeii was not discovered until 1748, when workers stumbled upon it while building the palace for King Charles III.
  • Pompeii is so well preserved and largely intact due to the fact it was buried rapidly by volcanic ash. It now provides a glimpse and learning of past life in an ancient Roman city.

What to Expect On Your Day Tour of Herculaneum & Pompeii from Naples

Your chauffeur will take you to your first stop, Herculaneum. Wherever you look, your eyes will be treated to beauty and natural wonder. Surprisingly, this town has retained its original splendor, and the ruins can now be viewed in the Ercolano community. Even though over 70% of the town is still buried, excavations in later years have revealed streets, buildings, wells and underground tunnels.
After Herculaneum, your chauffeur will continue the drive along the foot of Mount Vesuvius to your next destination, the vineyards. This region is the epitome of the perfect wine country, boasting some of Italy’s most famous vineyards.
The farm’s vines lay on Boscotrecase soil, the ancient “Bosco delle Tre Case Religiose” (The Wood of the Three Religious Houses), on the foot of the Sterminator Vesevo, the name the illustrious Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi gave to the Vesuvius.

Heading south to Pompeii which is your next destination, your chauffeur will continue this magical journey on the foot of Mount Vesuvius.
Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its grandeur, splendor and history will leave an indelible mark in your heart. Destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., the city frozen in time has provided historians with a glimpse into what life was like in ancient Rome, and more than a thousand casts have been made of recovered bodies that were preserved in the ash.
Located about five miles from Mount Vesuvius, the city was a flourishing resort for Rome’s most distinguished citizens with elegant houses and elaborate villas dotting the streets.
You have the option of exploring the site by yourself or with a licensed English-speaking tour guide. To make the best of your day, we recommend the latter (which can be booked in advance at an additional cost) as the area is spread over 108 acres.
After a refreshing day steeped in history, myths, legend and taste, you would be eager to share your experiences with the other members on the cruise ship. Your chauffeur will meet you outside the ruins to take you back to the Naples port.
