The Best of Naples on this Full Day Shore Excursion from Amalfi

Your day begins in the morning when our English-speaking chauffeur picks you up outside the cruise ship terminal at Amalfi port. You can look forward to an exciting and enriching day in Naples as you set out on this full day shore excursion. History, mythology, culture, and scenic beauty are all on the agenda; not to forget, there is also some pizza to enjoy!

Here are some interesting facts about Naples:

  • Naples history can be traced back over 2,800 years to the eighth century BC when people from the Greek colony of Cuma founded what was then called Parthenope.
  • Naples is the capital of the region of Campania, which comes from the name “campania felix” – Latin for “fertile countryside”.
  • The residents of Naples are called Neapolitans or, in Italian, Napoletani.
  • Naples has 3 castles; Castel Nuovo which was built in 1279 by Charles I of Anjou, Castel dell’Ovo (known as Egg castle) with ancient origins and Castel Sant’Elmo, a fortress towering over the city that dates back to at least 1275.
  • The horn is the most famous symbol of Neapolitan superstition. You will notice, however, that lots of doors and balconies sport huge bunches of red peppers instead, because their hot seeds symbolically ward off evil tongues.

What to Expect from Your Full Day Excursion to Naples from Amalfi:

Our chauffeur will first take you to The National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It is one of Italy’s most important archeology museums and definitely a must see! Established by King Charles II in the late 18th century, the museum contains some of the world’s best collections of Greek and Roman antiquities, including mosaics, sculptures, gems, glass and silver. Many of the objects come from excavations at Pompeii, Herculaneum, and nearby archaeological sites, and are displayed in thematic sections.

You have about two hours to go back in time and appreciate an ancient era. Your chauffeur will then take you to the “Galleria Umberto”, “Piazza Plebiscito”, “Castel Nuovo”, and the Town Hall of Naples.  You will also get a chance to see the Sansevero Chapel Museum in the historic heart of Naples, which is one of the most impressive monuments in the world. Baroque creativity, dynastic pride, beauty and mystery together leave a lasting impression. Make sure you see the Veiled Christ, a marble sculpture created in 1753. Made by Giuseppe Sanmartino, it is considered one of the world’s most remarkable sculptures.  You will also see Disillusion and the Anatomical Machines in the museum.

After treating yourself to a wonderful dose of history, your chauffeur will suggest a location where you can feast on the gastronomic pride of Naples, an authentic Neapolitan pizza!

Relax and enjoy the buzz of the city as you savor the local flavors of one of the most famous comfort foods.

Here are some interesting facts about Neapolitan Pizza:

  • Neapolitan pizza originated in Naples, Italy. It is prepared with simple and fresh ingredients: a basic dough, raw tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil.
  • There are no fancy toppings. One of its defining characteristics is that there is often more sauce than cheese, leaving the middle of the pie deliciously moist, and not conducive to being served by the slice.
  • Because of this distinguishing feature, Neapolitan pizzas are generally smaller than other types of pizza (about 10-12 inches), making them closer to the size of a personal pizza. Neapolitan pizzas are cooked at very high temperatures (800 F-900 F) for no more than 90 seconds.
  • The very first Neapolitan pizza was made for Queen Margherita in 1889. Named after the queen, the pizza was made with fresh basil, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese – colors of white, green, and red to honor the newly created country of Italy.
After a lunch that would leave you yearning for another visit to the area, your chauffeur will take you on a city tour. As you relax in the car, he will drive through various tourist points and share a wealth of information about Naples.

This wonderful day excursion will conclude with your chauffeur driving you back to the Amalfi port. As you head back to your ship, think about how you can regale your dinner-time company with wonderful stories of Naples!
