Here are some interesting facts

about the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii:

A famous eruption occurred in the year 79 A.D., where Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii and subsequently, the city of Herculaneum was also buried under a thick blanket of volcanic ash and hot gases

Around 2000 people in Pompeii died, and the city was abandoned for hundreds of years until a group of explorers rediscovered it in 1748. They dug out the ruins and learned a great deal about everyday life in ancient times

Unlike Pompeii, the city of ancient Herculaneum was never forgotten, however it wasn’t “rediscovered” again until 1709, when a farmer digging a well came across marble

After that, many explorations took place where workers dug vertical shafts and tunnels into the volcanic material. An archeologist named Amedeo Maiuri put together a group of workers to excavate, restore, and showcase the Roman houses to the public
