History
Here are some historical facts you might want to know before you make the trip to Naples: the first colonization of the Gulf of Naples dates back to around 3000 years ago. Travelers and merchants from Greece and Anatolia (attracted by the mineral wealth of Tirreno) founded the first colony in Pithecusa. This is currently the island of Ischia. This colony then moved onto the Phlegrean coast, just opposite the coast of Ischia, where Cuma rose. In the fifth century B.C., a group of colonists from Cuma settled in the area between the small island of Megaride (known as the Castel dell’Ovo today), and Mount Echia (today the hill of Pizzofalcone). They founded the city of Parthenope. This is how the history of Naples began.
Archaeological
Our first stop on this day tour in Naples will be at The National Archaeological Museum of Naples, one of the first museums founded in Europe in the 1800’s. It contains the richest and most valuable collection of art and artifacts of archaeological interest in Italy. Inside the museum, you will find over 3000 exemplary valuables divided into several thematic sections. The antiques are sorted by relevance, starting with the Farnese Collection belonging to the royal dynasty of the Bourbons, who are the founders of the museum. After about two hours in the museum, your Chauffeur of Positano will then show you around “Piazza del Municipio” which houses many important buildings, including the town hall, administrative courts, the “Galleria Umberto”, “Piazza Plebiscito”, and the famous, 13th century “Castel Nuovo”. While making your way through the old town center, you will be directed towards the Sansevero Chapel Museum in the historic heart of Naples. This museum is a true gem of the world’s artistic heritage. This is where baroque creativity, dynastic pride, beauty, and mystery blend together to create a unique and seemingly timeless atmosphere.
Food
Your day tour in Naples isn’t over yet, though! Your driver will soon suggest a location where you can savor the authentic taste of a true Neapolitan pizza. Our pizza has distant origins tracing back to as early as the 1500’s. In the ancient suburbs of Naples, the focaccia bread was actually called pizza. To make it more appetizing, Neapolitan cooks began to spread a lard compound on it, and also added salt, garlic or cheese, and basil to create a richer version. In 1889, there was a historical crowning achievement. It occurred during the visit of King Umberto I and his wife, Queen Margherita. A man named Raffaele Esposito, who was considered the best pizza maker at the time, served pizza to the visiting sovereigns. Queen Margherita appreciated the taste of his dish so much that she thanked Esposito in writing. To reciprocate the queen’s gratitude, Esposito named the pizza topped with tomatoes and mozzarella after her. That is when and how the delicious Pizza Margherita was born! After lunch you will be taken on a tour of the city of Naples by car. Your driver will share plenty of information and stories about this famous city as you drive around. After the tour, your Chauffeur of Positano will take you back to your accommodation. During the relaxing drive, you can digest all of the newly learned information about the city of Naples and start dreaming about coming back for more!
